Artist Statement: Danielle Burford
As a professional artist, my work is a deeply personal reflection of Australia’s essence, capturing its natural landscapes and cultural heritage. Born in Warrawong, NSW, and growing up in Bourke, my connection to the land and its stories is at the heart of my art. As a proud Wiradjuri woman, my art grounds me, connecting me to my roots and allowing me to share the beauty of this amazing land.
My creative process is both educational and intricate, beginning with thorough research into the anatomy, habitats, and diets of my subjects. This understanding forms the foundation of my art, ensuring each piece is a detailed and accurate representation of its subject. I work in layers, starting with a background that depicts the essence of the subject’s environment—be it the ocean, a river, or tree bark. I then create a tattoo-like outline on canvas, adding intricate details that highlight the animal’s anatomy and characteristics.
My evolving style fosters a three-dimensional perspective, offering viewers a dynamic and immersive experience. Many of my recent works feature snakes, which hold significant symbolic meaning in Wiradjuri culture. Snakes represent fertility, rebirth, and the cyclical nature of life, embodying both creation and destruction. Their presence in my art reflects these profound themes, inviting viewers to explore these deeper connections.
Exhibiting my work regionally and internationally has brought me great joy, as I share my vision and inspire new perspectives in diverse audiences. My art continues to evolve as I explore new subjects and techniques that reflect the ever-changing beauty of my environment, particularly in Coffs Harbour, where the coastal landscapes fuel my creativity.
Through my art, I offer a glimpse into the richness of Australian nature and culture. Each piece is a testament to my heritage and my love for the natural world, inviting viewers to see the world through my eyes and discover new perspectives with every glance.
